Tacoma First Baptist Church has been built on a 35-year history of worship, prayer and ministry in the Tacoma/Lakewood, WA., area. It was born out of a first-generation Korean-speaking immigrant congregation that also gave birth to a growing English-speaking congregation. As a result, over the years we’ve been able to reach and touch a wide range of peoples, both Korean and English-speaking.
Now both language groups grow together in a mutual relationship currently serving over 2,000 members.
We have a vision of building a multi-ethnic church with a Korean core group. Under the leadership of our senior pastor, the English Language Ministry (“ELM”) and Korean Language Ministry (“KLM”) of TFBC work closely to build one body in Christ inclusive of all our various ministries.
To that end, we are now seeking new staff for one key ELM positions. Please see the tab below for the relevant position the Lord may be leading you to.
TFBC is now seeking a full/part-time English-speaking children’s minister to shepherd and teach our children, birth through sixth grade. Our children come from families of varying ethnic, cultural backgrounds: First-generation Korean families, American servicemen whose wives are Korean, Korean-American second-generation married couples as well as other mixed ethnic married couples.
The candidate must have prior ministry experience including working in a Korean-American church context.
Required Qualifications:
I. Fluent in English (ability to understand and speak Korean a huge plus but not necessary);
II. Have a clear calling to children’s ministry;
III. Be currently enrolled in seminary or have completed it;
IV. At least 1 year of (children’s) ministry experience;
V. Be able to commit to at least 1 year of service during which an initial 90 day review period will be observed to evaluate effectiveness and overall integration into the leadership structure. This includes:
- Agreement not to teach outside the parameters of the Baptist Faith and Message;
- Personally owning the multi-ethnic vision of the church;
- Not emphasizing and/or exercising ecstatic gifts (e.g. tongues, prophetic utterances) as a group;
- Coordinate and serve under the senior pastor and alongside the rest of the pastoral staff, and children’s directors;
- Communicating and working with parents, encouraging parental involvement both in children’s lives as well as in church.
- Encourage and maintain boundaries of appropriate behavior for children and her-/himself;
- Preparing, teaching/preaching as called upon outside normally scheduled times;
Not required but very helpful…
- Southern Baptist background and seminary
- U.S. residency or citizenship;
- 2-3 sermon MP3s/CDs/DVDs
- While English is the primary language the youth minister will be using, being bilingual in Korean and English would be a huge asset; if capable of preaching in Korean, even better!
